awkward and awesome

usually I do outfit posts with awkward and awesome, but I don't have any for today, so please enjoy some back to school scenes.

Walking out of class when the girl in front of you is talking to you, but you don't know her, and she turns around and says "ooops, you aren't the person I thought you were!".

Standing at the bathroom sink washing my hands when the mean girl from last year is doing the same thing at the same time and not a word was said.  I probably should have said something, but nothing nice came to mind.  And you know what my mom taught me....

Class introductions (and it never fails) "I'm Alyssa and I don't think I did anything this summer... wait no I didn't do anything, anything, at all." What I should have said was "I'm Alyssa, and this summer I worked." It was one of those things where you wished the people would have laughed to break the tension in the air.... didn't happen.

Walking around the building and passing my teacher twice, eye contact was not made the second time.  He must have thought I was some crazed student who just walks in circles.

Talking to a girl, who I don't know, in orientation about the 7$ mac&cheese I just had and me being appalled that it was 7$!!  She didn't seem all that amused that my mac&cheese was 7$, and then she brought her bag up and it was a big 'ole Marc Jacobs one.. obviously 7$ to her is chunk change.

The Arizona heat.  It makes everything smell. Like my bus for example, it smelt like the boys locker room.

Having a day off and being able to spend it with Brand.  It's the one day this summer where we've actually had nothing to do, like no work, school or volunteering.  It was our one day of vacation.  And I'm so grateful for it!

Waking up and realizing you have 2 more hours till you actually have to be up.

Introducing Brand to Frasier, now he can't get enough of it. (It's one of my childhood tv shows)

Brand starting school! So excited for him to be in the masters program, I feel like we have officially ended the life of working in corporate america and started life being in school... and in debt. Debt = not awesome.

Getting out of class 25 minutes early.  And my teacher made sure we understood that it was never happening again.

What are you awkward and awesome moments?

rain means cleaning and cleaning means change

Sunday seemed like the day of change for us. Isn't it weird how things happen?  All of a sudden your loving what your doing, you don't see an end in sight and then someone pulls the rug right out from under you.  The rug wasn't exactly pulled from under us, and it really had been a great blessing and calling for Brand and I.  Remember how sometimes I talk about my primary kids? Well, this weekend we were released from our callings.  I have to admit I was pretty sad when I found out. I started playing the scenario in my mind and saying "don't cry, don't cry!"  I don't know what I'm going to do without those kiddos!

I've learned so much from them, and I hope they've learned from me too.

Yesterday when we walked out of the apartment on our way to church it was raining.  When I think about rain I think about clean, and when I think about clean I think about change.  Which got me to thinking about almost everything that is going on in our lives.  We are literally being cleaned of a calling, starting fresh.  We are both starting school and going to have such busy schedules.  We will be living on loans and having to find a way to budget what little money we have.

It's all changing. It's almost like starting fresh.

The rain on Sunday morning made me realize that this is the start of a new chapter in our lives.  It's a new beginning of sorts.  The kind that starts with "and so the rain came down and they started a new life" kind of thing. My life isn't a story book, not the kind I've ever read anyways. But my imagination wonders when I start to think about the things that will happen in these next few months.  The changes that we will make in our lives.  I can already sense that it's going to be oh so hard, but in the end oh so worth it.

I look forward to the things that are coming our way, and hope to be able to share my life still.

Happy Tuesday!

a really short cap of our saturday

What better thing to do then talk about your weekend after a long working Monday?  That's what I thought.
This weekend Brand and I enjoyed ourselves, we knew we had to make the very best of it because we were starting our new school year.  If you live in Arizona you probably know about the telethon that AHS puts on every year, well, Brandon and I were helpers at the telethon this year.  I have to say it was a whole lot of fun having all those animal lovers under one roof.  Between holding fluffy puppies, meeting Marge Wright (the lady who practically started pets on parade), and seeing homeless animals find new homes my heart was ecstatic!  If you're like me then there isn't anything more perfect then a big fluffy puppy who loves to cuddle and give kisses.  Oh, those puppy kisses.

The rest of the weekend was relaxing and peaceful.  I'm starting to think that a weekend like this will be far and few between for us for at least the next couple months.  But all I can say is that it's so worth it.

Happy Monday! We've made it!

what do you do in the temple

If you've ever wondered what goes on inside the LDS temples this just might be the best video to watch.  I'm so grateful to have temples on this earth and am so grateful for the comfort and power I feel when I attend the temple.  It is so worth everything.

i said i would do it

Yesterday was the most official last first day I've ever had. That means it was monotonous. We read syllabi and did class introductions.  Sometimes I think the first days are just pointless, like I can read the syllabus at home and I'll send you an email if I get confused or have a question.  I guess it's a nice was to meet the teacher before she/he starts slamming garb down your throat. Okay, they mean well.  I have to say and I know I say this every time I start school, but I'm pretty nervous for this semester.  There is so much that I have going on.

Have I told you about my internship? Well, I can't really, it's one of the confidential things that I shouldn't talk about on here.  But I can say that I'm nervous to mess up, I guess this whole nervousness comes from the unknown.  I'm not a lover of the unknown.  In fact, I dislike it. Just tell me what's going to happen and I'll be that much happier. I mean really.

I know I'm not the only one, but it's still a little nerve wracking.
Anyways, did I tell you that I made the Dean's List last semester too?! Yep, really hoping I can keep it up this semester! And can I say that the certificates they give now are just a piece of paper, it used to be a nice glossy one, but now it's a regular one. haha, oh asu.

Have a great weekend friends!  Today Brand and I both have the day off so we are going to enjoy our last day of freedom and no worries!!

Good luck!! Here's to making new friends and having a good semester!

one of my first last days of school

^picture via dad, and then he posted it to fb. what a turd (:

And so yesterday was one of my first last days of school.  Technically tomorrow is my last first day of school because that's when my actual classes start, but yesterday pretty much started it all off.  It was one of those days where the staff says "let's come up with the meanest thing to do to these seniors." and then they decided to lecture ALL DAY LONG.  I can't really complain though because I got 8 internship hours for sitting in a class and listening to people talk.  Not-too-shabby... I guess.

We had a few breaks here and there and I went with a group of classmates to a corner bakery and ordered my typical mac&cheese.  If I've never been to a place before I always look for the "safe" foods and mac&cheese is my main squeeze.  So I paid 7$ for that mac&cheese, 7$! I was surprised when I found out how much it was and was thinking the cheese was made of diamonds or something. One thing I have to say is that if you sell your mac&cheese for 7$ it had better be the best I've ever had.  It was good, but it wasn't the best.  And then I started thinking about how I would love to have like 5 different mac&cheeses in front of me so I could really accurately judge who makes it the best.

After class got out I took a stroll downtown and walked to my dad's work.  I felt kind of touristy because of all the pictures I was taking, but let's get real, I don't have many downtown pictures in my picture collection. I walked and walked in 108 degree heat, thankfully some of the buildings shaded me, I saw charming charlie's and was tempted to walk inside, but realized I had my backpack on and they would probably mistake me for a robber.  Maybe next time. I don't know what it is about a city with tall buildings, but it makes me feel adventurous. I have to say, it's definitely no new york!

(could you spot the group of freshmen? why would you wear an asu shirt the first day of school?)

there's a first time for everything...

This weekend flew by, of course it's like most weekends and it was actually pretty eventful.

So Friday night we remembered we had a giftcard to texas roadhouse --never been there before-- and so of course that's where we headed.  We've heard a lot of talk about it and have always wondered why everyone likes it so much. So there we are,  eating -like you do at any restaurant, when I see (at a few tables behind Brand) two ladies waving a fan in another ladies face and hear someone on the phone with 911.  Long story short a lady was taken out on a gurney all the while we are eating... awkwardly eating might I add.  For some reason it just doesn't feel right to be eating while someone is being rushed out on a gurney, but we just kept eating and everyone else stood up in their chairs to be nosy and look at all the commotion.

I guess the whole thing was just awkward and it made me start thinking about how nosy people generally are.  And it ended up with me coming to the conclusion that people are general nosy, although I don't feel that I myself am, because the social worker in me says "well how would I feel if people were staring at me?" so I don't like to stare.  Also, didn't our mothers tell us it's not polite?! Come on people!

After dinner, we realized that texas roadhouse isn't all it's cracked up to be and agreed that we would probably never go again unless we got a gift card and didn't have to wait more than 15 minutes to get a seat. I guess we aren't really country folk.
First I'll answer your question.  Yes, that is a car seat in the back of our car, I'm a nanny until Wednesday.

Afterwards I had a $10 kohls cash that was burning a hole in my pocket -don't they always, and so we had to use it.  I once again found nothing that I had to have, but Brand found this cute collared shirt.  So the trip wasn't all for not, thank goodness.

Also, have I ever told you about Arizona's sunsets?  Friday night's was to die for, it turned the sky purple right as it was ending and it was one of those that looks better in person than in a picture. Arizona is notorious for beautiful sunsets and my most favorite thing to do in spring is to hike the mountain just before sunset and sit and watch. Mmmm beautiful.

Somewhere in between Friday and Saturday night we had a starbucks run, we don't go there too often because it's pretty expensive, but when we do it's heavenly.  I think I finished my frap in about 5 minutes.

One more thing, we discussed that our future children are going to be lovers of The Temptations just like us. Oh and Billy Joel.   End of story.

Happy Monday!

summing up

Yesterday I realized that this weekend is my last weekend of freedom.  No, I'm not going to jail.  School starts on Tuesday and I'm already freaking out. I've got so much on my mind right now and I feel like school is my last priority.  These next two semesters are going to be killer for Brand and I.  Brand got accepted into the Masters program and his brother says that the program is just like the first year of dental school, so it's pretty rough. I'm taking 5 classes this semester and I also have an internship 16 hours a week. Sometimes I over stress, and I think this is one of those times, but sometimes it's just hard for me to not worry.
This summer was good to me.  I worked/got to play with my kiddos all day (which to me is so much more fun than actual work or even gong to school, I love those kiddos!)  We soaked up the sun had weekly traditions and really took full advantage of our summer!  Monday was our swim day, Tuesday Barnes and Noble Book Club, Wednesday Kids Club at the mall, and Thursday was our eat out day. We relished in those traditions, but I might be the only one who misses them.  Isn't it funny how kids grow up and are all of a sudden too cool for you? Those little turds. Anyway, I missed swimming with them on Monday and when I was over at their house I couldn't help but feel nostalgic about the whole summer.  While it flew right by us I thoroughly enjoyed every single moment, even if I had to use the naughty step on a certain little boy.

Throughout the summer I kept reminding them of how many weeks of summer they had left, just so it wouldn't sneak up too quickly and so they could prepare themselves.  I also think that reminder was for me. To know that riiiiight after they got in school it was going to be my turn and then everything would change and I wouldn't be able to be with them after school anymore.  *heart broken*

"Are you leaving us?"  The words out of baby B's mouth, she is a cleaver one that girl.  I had to explain to them that I wasn't leeeeeaving, but that we should just blame the whole situation on my school. Because, it really is their fault.  I reminded them that I'm just one snapchat away and that they know how to get a hold of me.  I'm so grateful to have been able to watch/nanny these kiddos for the past year. They are such a blessing in my life and I've learned so much through them. Isn't amazing how kids can open your eye to a whole new world?  And that all they really need in life is love.  I love those kiddos!

I think the summery to this summer's ending is that good things come to an end.  And once one good thing ends another begins.  Well, that's what I'm hopeful for with these next two semesters.

Cheers to change.

how to dress a pear shaped body {the skinny jean}

top: tjmaxx (option, option, option), skinnies: nordstrom (simple gray jean), earrings: elisabethspace, flats: tjmaxx c/o jack rogers (similar color), watch: no longer being sold (similar, similar--mens version)
When dressing a pear shaped body it's not ideal to wear skinny jeans.  Why? Because they hug your curves and make everything more noticeable.  If you can't get away from skinny jeans, and there is nothing wrong with that, make them work for you.  Customize your outfit so everyone looks everywhere BUT at the bottom!

For my pear shaped body my hips are really what stick out the most.  Once I turned 21 they just popped right out, I have no idea where they came from!  Kinda weird, but I'm trying my best to make it work for me. So when trying to disguise my hips I like to wear patterned tunics where the bottom touchs right where my hips are.  With lots of pattern on the top the eye tends to focus there instead at my hips.

When pairing jewelry with a patterned top it's important to not go too far overboard.  You have a patterned top so subtle jewelry is the better option.  You'll notice I didn't wear a necklace and my earrings are a bit smaller then last week's earrings.

Go here to see last week's post about how to dress a pear shaped body {the maxi}

fry bread for two

First I HAAAAVE to say that this ^ picture just might be one of my favorites. Brand is licking his fingers clean of the sugar, cinnamon, and honey residue that took refuge there.
How are you NOT drooling?!?

So just let me start by telling you how much I love finding new places to eat. I love it a lot.  So much that when I eat their for the first time I know that it wont be my last and it gets me all excited.  This weekend we found a restaurant that hit the jackpot.  White Eyes Fresh Fry Bread, is what they call it.  It's one of those places that you can see your self coming back to not only for the dinner but for the dessert too.

It's like Mexican food on steroids, and we all know how much I love Mexican food.

I could see this place it being extremely successful in New York, with all the hustle and bustle of the city, hungry workers of corporate America on their lunch break just looking for the place that will hit the spot. Or maybe it's because I feel like this is the kind of food they eat in New York, made quick to be eaten on the go.  And then sometimes I think I just hold New York to a high standard of intrigue and zeal. I mean, all the movies make it look like such a cool city.  I know I'd live there in a heart beat.  I don't think my heart has been the same since 07 when I took my first visit.

Baaaack to my weekend foodie visit.  Speaking of foodie, I'm pretty sure the people thought I was a foodie with the amount of pictures I was taking. It kind of felt awkward! I even had Brand take a few for me because I felt like a total dweeb! Has this ever happened to you?!

So the dinner was great and the dessert was delicious, and we will be heading back there again I'm absolutely positive.
And of course, our night would not be complete without a trip to world market.  Let's just take a minute and  look at all that yummy chocolate. I couldn't get myself to buy any of it, but I was just fine standing back and talking a long stare at it. I can only imagine what those kids felt when the got to go to willy wonka's chocolate factory. Turds.

We spent a good half hour there and I strolled along every isle picturing each item in my apartment, until I ran out of space in my apartment.  Then I started decorating a new apartment.  I could decorate my life in world market, such ornate beautiful things they have.
