Hi! my name is Alyssa.

So last month on instagram (you can find me here: @lyssadawson) everyone and their mom was doing the 5 things post. I'm the kind of person that never gets picked for things like this and I was definitely perturbed that no one ever picked me.
I know, wahh wahh.
In the end my sil did pick me, but I forgot to actually do the post.
So, I thought it would be fun to also post it on the blog!

I can touch my tongue to my nose, but it's not a pretty sight when I do.  Sometimes it reminds me of the bitter beer man... yeah.

<< 2. >>
Throughout my young life, before I got married, I always slept with the blankets untucked from the matress. If they weren't untucked I couldn't fall asleep.  I liked to have them wrapped around my feet to keep me extra warm.

In 7th and 8th grade I was captain of the volleyball team.  Freshman year of high school I wasn't told about volleyball tryouts so I missed them and had to hang up the knee pads and booty shorts for a seat on the bleachers.

I once was obsessed with Shia LaBeouf, I had a whole book that was dedicated to the movie Holes and Even Stevens only because he was in them.  You could have called it creepy because it was.  Just a note, this was before the creepy beard and long hair era.

When I was 12 I had just moved to a new house and a new ward.  I left all my friends that I had known for 8 years and had to find a way to  make new ones, but I was shy. At my new ward I was made fun of, no one ever sat by me, and no one wanted to be my friend until one day when I was leaving church.  I was walking out of the church and to the car when I told my mom that I didn't want to go to church anymore because everyone was so mean.  Moments later I hear one of the older girls calling my name, she gave me something and told me that she was glad to have me in young womens and that she wanted to sit by me next week in church.  This is one of the first of many experiences where I knew my Heavenly Father was looking out for me, that He was really there and that he wanted to know I was of great worth.  (more on the rest of the story later.)

what I wore: {let's talk designer}

Happy Monday!
How was your weekend?
It's day's like today were I wish I could just pause and rewind the weekend.

button up: j.crew, sweater: target, jeans: f21, boots: famous footwear, belt: thrifted, bracelets: juicy & Tiffany's, earrings: the limited
click here & here to view other outfit ideas for the gingham shirt.
Sorry for the poor quality photo, we were running late and I couldn't take the pictures outside. I'll try and get some new ones up this week.

Anyway, lets talk designer.
Is it worth buying?
Why is it so expensive?
Am I really going to wear it that much?

This gingham shirt is J.Crew and
I bought it a few months ago online.
I bought it as a cudos to me for selling my goal product on Etsy.
(I've never bought J.Crew before, and I've also never bought clothing online.)
After I purchased the shirt I stalked it as it traveled to my apartment, when it finally arrived I was in heaven.
The packaging was just perfect and so was the shirt.
I put it on right away and to my surprise I ordered the perfect size.

I've worn the shirt countless times and it has become a go-to piece in my wardrobe.
I've always been skeptical about buying designer clothes.
I mean, spending over 20$ for a shirt is hard enough, but spending over 50$ it's just vomit worthy.
(okay, I'm cheap!)
But, after purchasing this gingham button up and realizing that the colors don't fade after three washes, I've come to like designer.
I'm not saying I'm going to replace everything in my closet with designer clothes, I'm just saying sometimes I will splurge.
I'm also saying that when there is an extremely versatile piece of clothing, like the gingham button up, I might be a little bit more tempted to purchase it.

I've also had a similar experience with a skirt from The Limited.
When I was 16 I got a gift card to The Limited and purchased the best black skirt.
Long story short, I still have the skirt and it's in great condition.
In fact, it still is my favorite skirt ever!

I am on a pretty strict budget, like many of you I'm sure, so when it comes down to purchasing that perfect designer piece it can be a tough decision.
Do I want to buy this shirt or do I want to be able to eat this week?
TIP: Buy when things go on clearance!
This gingham shirt was originally 80$.
On clearance it was 50$ with and extra 15% off.

If you search online you can find coupon codes for free shipping as well.
And remember, the quality is good so that's why they are more expensive.
If you have any questions or just want to chat send me an email!

What are your thoughts on buying designer?
Have you ever purchased anything designer?

This weekend Brand and I got acquainted with the Mumford & Sons Cd so here are some of our faves:

- When your in a group and someone says goodbye to everyone, individually, but you. Ron Weasley's voice comes to mind "Yeah, I'm still here!" (I bet you read it with an English accent. Click here if you want to watch the clip to refresh your memory skip to 1:10)
- Mis-hearing someone,
"Hi, I'm Brother Blah-Blah."
"Oh, I'm good, how are you?"
- Watching the kids and a guy telling them that they should "ask their mom". Obviously he thought I was their mom, but do I look old enough to have two eight-year-olds?
- When you hear someone talking about you while you walk behind them, and you don't have the nerve to say anything.  Actually, I just didn't want to be rude, oh and ps I will not be helping you when you have more questions.... TURD!
- Taking my money out of my purse while Brand is watching and counting it, I've got 15$ in ones. Me to Brand: "I swear, it's not what you think!"

- Taking the kids on an adventurous day and coming home and they are dead tired and just want to watch tv! They
never want to watch tv!
- Finally buying light bulbs for the ceiling fan, we've been down to one out of three lights for about a week. Oh what a difference those two extra lights make!
- My teacher reminded us that we only have 10 weeks left of class.
- Getting ready for my pinterest self care day with the girls. If you are a social worker you will understand my reference.
- We usually wake up when the sun rises which tends to be around 7:15 (I know, tough life right?! Kidding!). But this morning it was rainy so the sun wasn't out and we woke up at 8:30. Good thing I didn't have work or school this morning and Brandon could get ready fast!

fun foods: double chocolaty chip red velvet cookies

First of all, shout-out to Pinterest.
Last week on my coupon trip I scored three boxes of red velvet cake mix for free.
Only problem, I don't want to make THAT much cake, but I figured I'd be able to find a good recipe on Pinterest.
Boy, was I right!

Here is the website to the original recipe that I used, I'm not trying to steal her stuff, but I definitely wanted to share the recipe with you!

These cookies are so yummy! I even tested them on the kids and they were mad that I didn't bring them anymore!

Red Velvet cake mix
4 oz. of cream cheese
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 cup chocolate chips
1/4 cup white chocolate chips
1 stick of butter

1. In a mixing bowl combine everything but the chocolate and white chocolate chips - by using a beater.
(if you want to try it by hand more power to ya.) Beat ingredients together until they are thoroughly mixed. Once ingredients are mixed place chocolate chips and white chocolate chips in and mix around with a spoon till they are found consistent throughout the dough.

2. Place the dough in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to chill.

3. Take the dough out of the refrigerator and preheat your oven to 350 degrees.

4. Form the dough into 1 - 1 1/2 inch balls and place them on a non stick baking sheet.

5. Place the baking sheet in the oven for 9 minutes.

6.  When the cookies are done baking take them out of the oven and let them rest for about two minutes on the baking sheet before moving them to parchment paper.  Make sure the cookies are cooled before you seal them up in a container.

One Tip: I like them best when they are cold.

(This should make up to 36 cookies depending on how big or small you form your dough.)

i want my post titles to be like fall out boy's song titles, long and scrolly

Is it obvious that I've been listening to Fall Out Boy?
Is it me or are their song titles ridiculous but fun at the same time?

If you were to visit me this morning, you would have seen a disheveled me.
Bed head, mismatching p.j.'s on, no make-up, and my mascara definitely rubbed off and found refuge just under my eyes.
Cute huh?
Well, as you know my life is very perfect.

If you were to visit me right now, I probably wouldn't let you in.
I would pretend I wasn't home because, well, it's 9 o'clock.
It's not because I don't like you.

If you were to have visited me yesterday afternoon you would have seen Brand and I figuring out our itunes stuff.
I would have let you in, only to warn you that the computer area exploded.
I've had songs that I've needed to authorize for such a long time, but the whole thing was such a process.
It went like this
Deauthorize, wait... you forgot the password that you haven't used in 5 years?
How could you!?
an hour later
On the phone with apple, get transfered 3 times,
I finally figure out where the forgot password button is
reset everything and figure it out, hang up on apple because they take too long.
I guess it was worth it since I have over 200 songs that I haven't been able to listen to in forever!

If you were to have visited me yesterday after the apple problem you would have smelt cookies!
I'd tell you that I tried this new recipe,
(I'll have it on the blog tomorrow)
and the cookies taste the best after they've been in the fridge.
I would let you try one, I'd insist you drink milk with it, it's even better that way.
If you were to visit me this afternoon I wouldn't have been home.
I took the kids I nanny to see the temple, to hike the mountain and to play at the park.
Obviously I'm up for nanny of the year award.
We had a good time today.

It's days like these where I wish I had my own kids to take on outings and enjoy.
If you were to have visited us after we got home you would have seen three tired kiddos.
But, that only means it was a good day.

my week in pictures

Is it really 2 o'clock on Friday? This week went buy super fast, as I thought it would and I still have lots of homework to finish! But instead, I've been surfing the internet for the past hour... looks like we know where my priorities stand!

On set yesterday with Pets on Parade, I'm not on tv this week but it sure was fun to help with the animals in the background!
I'm addicted, I completed another baby blanket this week! You like my trusty crochet hook? It's getting worn out!
the only Valentine's decor we have and a lovely secret cupid gave it to us! Thanks secret cupid!
V-day dinner with this handsome guy last night, we are low key folk.
Walking to school this week I thought I was going to freeze, there was ice all over the cars and it looked like it had snowed on the grass.  But, this arizona girl likes the cold!

Happy Friday!

happy Valentine's Day my love

Right now I cannot imagine my life without Brand,
but at age 17 if you were to tell me that I would be married at 19 I would never believe you.
When I was younger I thought I was never going to get married.
I thought I would be lonely forever.
Turns out, I was wrong.

I count my blessing for having an amazing husband.
I'm grateful for all the things that he has done for me.
I'm grateful for his hard work,
he never gives up on what he believes.

I'm grateful for his laughter,
there isn't a day that goes by where I don't laugh when I'm around him, and sometimes the laughter is the kind where you're laughing so hard that you can't even breathe... that's how you know it was really funny.

I'm grateful for his caring side,
he knows how to make me happy.
I'm grateful that he tells me I'm beautiful,
half the time I don't believe it, because I'm a girl and that's just how we are, but I know he really means it.
Even when I wake up with raccoon eyes and war paint on my face.
And that's how I know it's true.

I'm grateful for his love for family.
Especially for his love of children.
I love watching him with our nieces and nephews. Not much could melt my heart more.

I'm grateful for his non comparing self.
He doesn't compare himself to others, I've never known anyone else with this trait.
I'm honestly saying NEVER I've never heard him do it.

I'm grateful for his fun side,
he is always trying to make things fun.
I think it's that child like fun that I wish I always had.

There are so many things that I am grateful for, but for the most part I'm grateful for his love.
I'm so glad to have him as my best friend!
He is the best and I am one lucky girl!

Here is a little treat for you, I went through and found some fun oldies/90's love songs and plugged them into this playlist! Enjoy and Happy Valentine's Day!

that one time I was on tv

Ever since I was a little girl I've had a thing for animals.
When I was three my mom and dad got me a dog for my birthday.
And for 15 years Mandy and I were inseparable.

On my 16th birthday my nana and I went down to the Arizona Humane Society "just to look" at the animals.
(I think I get my thing for animals from my nana.)
Long story short we ended up bring a sweet puppy home with us.

As long as I can remember Saturday mornings have been my favorite.
This is especially true between the ages of 8-18.
First, it meant that I didn't have to go to school.
Second Pets on Parade would be on.
and third through one hundred, again, I didn't have to go to school.
But, I really loved watching pets on parade.
I loved seeing the sweet animals on tv.
And ever since then I've had this itching to be on Pets on Parade.
Silly school girl dream? Sure.

Well last October Brand and I started volunteering at the Arizona Humane Society
We do dog adoptions and also walk the dogs.
I got talking to some of the other volunteers about Pets on Parade.
I told them how I've always wanted to be on it.
That it was some silly girl dream that I had.
Another long story short.
I got in contact with one of the coordinators, she confirmed that I could in fact be on the show
and the rest is history.

Last week was my first debut and I must say it was pretty fun!
I didn't say one peep, but just take a look at the cute puppies I got to hold!
I'm on again this Saturday so if you missed it last week you can tune in this time!
Channel 3 at 12:30!

Oh, did I tell you this show has been around for 50+ years?!

making doggie treats, that puppy sure liked them!
Here is a six second clip of sweet Jagger licking my face!
Happy Wednesday friends!

Tips to having a memorable Valentine's Day

^^ Last year around Halloween I had a fun picnic dinner planned

Around these parts Valentine's Day is just another day.  We don't do much, typically we just do dinner or lunch depending on if we want to wait in huge lines or not. It's always hard to do special things when you have such a small budget like we do.  But, I thought it might be fun to actually try this year.

I've been searching online for some fun ideas so with out further adieu:

1. Have a night in - This potentially could be one of the cheapest ways to celebrate Valentine's Day.  Plan dinner for two, cook him his favorite dinner or try something special.  You could do a three course meal or just do a main course and dessert.  Your meal could correspond with the Valentine's Day theme.  For example you could make hamburgers and shape the patties into a heart, you could also find Valentine's Day bowls (at dollartree or the 99 cent store) preferably in the shape of a heart of course. Don't forget the chocolate covered strawberries for dessert! After planning your meal find some fun games to play. I've found this great website that has a list of two player games, check it out here

2. Go out to dinner - If you do this see if your restaurant takes reservations.  Not many restaurants do, especially on Valentine's Day, but it's always good to check.  Make sure you bring games to play while you wait it will make the time go by much faster! Some games you can play could be games on your phone, but you could always bring a fun card game to play as well!

3. Make it a picnic dinner - This is similar to the first idea, and if it's snowing you will just have to make it an inside picnic. Gather your picnic basket, and main picnic essentials and head out for some fun.  Bring some heart confetti to spread out on your picnic blanket to set the theme.

4.  Don't stay in one place - Hop around.  That place you go to every weekend has gotten boring and there is a new place that you've been dying to try because everyone you know loves it.  Head over to the new place everyone has been buzzing about, then check out that cupcake shop that you've always wanted to try but haven't and finish your night at a local karaoke bar, it's Valentine's Day, there is bound to be one somewhere. Order virgin drinks and enjoy watching everyone sin.

5. People watch - Valentine's Day is one of the best days to people watch.  Come up with different "lifes" for each couple you see, get dramatic about it.  Like, "that couple over there is on their first date and they guy is from the CIA but, he is a mediocre agent because he has no idea that she is a Russian spy sent to kill him.  She is supposed to drag out the relationship and learn about his family, sooner or later they will fall in love and move to Australia."  These kinds of dates are the best because it can really bring out his creative side.  It's also fun to think about other people's lives, well I guess for me it is.

I hope you all have a fabulous Valentines Day!

right now I'm in Saturday mode

 I love Saturday!

Our Saturdays usually consist of volunteering at the Arizona Humane Society, doing a little bit of work, and then spending the rest of the day asking each other "now what do you want to do" questions.
But last Saturday was a little bit different.

The plan was to get our homework done, watch me on tv (ha, like that doesn't sound conceited),
go to a birthday celebration and enjoy the chocolate affair.
Only two of those things were accomplish and one of them was not homework.
And in between those shenanigans we found ourselves making breakfast, watching The Office, and spending time with family.

To be fair, I don't think we are going to get much homework done with shenanigans like that ^^.
I mean really, how often do you get your homework done when you have much funner plans to accomplish?
That's what I thought.
I have to admit, this weekend was great.
It was filled with the laziest of days and some yummy food.
I'm not a bacon lover, but I sure do love the smell of it being cooked.

Today I'm sad that it's Monday, but then when I think about it
These weeks really seem to be going by so fast.
So I don't really have anything to worry about.

How was your weekend?
Did you catch me on tv?
What did you think? I'll share more of that with you on Wednesday!

Happy Monday to you my friends!
If you are having a bad day, just remember that He knows whats best.
